Donald Trump's 'Sleepy Joe' Biden insult comes back to haunt him as he cant stay awake

It's one of the oldest rules in politics be careful what you mock, because it just might become your headline someday.

For years, Donald Trump leaned hard into the "Sleepy Joe" narrative. It was a central piece of his political brand, a way to hammer Biden on age and mental sharpness. During his appearance on the Flagrant podcast, Trump was particularly blunt about it: "You'll never see me sleeping in front of a camera."

Those words are now everywhere again only this time, they're being played right alongside footage of Trump himself.

The Moment That Sparked the Backlash

Monday's White House event was straightforward enough on paper. The administration was rolling out Moms.gov, a new federal website targeting resources for American women. Trump spoke, took his seat, and then as officials stepped up to the podium behind him the cameras kept rolling.

What they captured sparked immediate controversy. Trump's eyes appeared to close fully on multiple occasions while others were mid-speech. The clips spread quickly, and the comparisons to "Sleepy Joe" started flooding social media within hours.

The official White House Rapid Response account tried to push back, posting on X: "He was blinking, you absolute moron," alongside a photo of the president with his eyes completely shut. The defense didn't land particularly well with critics, who found the explanation hard to sell.

This Wasn't the First Time

What made the backlash even sharper was that this wasn't an isolated moment.

Back in April, another clip had already gone viral showing Trump appearing to nod off during a live, televised Oval Office press event even while people in the room were speaking directly nearby. That incident had largely faded from the news cycle, but Monday's footage brought it roaring back.

Political strategist Chris D. Jackson didn't hold back in his assessment. He pointed out what he saw as a glaring media double standard, arguing that if Biden had been caught on camera like this twice it would have triggered days of wall-to-wall coverage and widespread alarm. With Trump, he argued, the reaction has been far more muted.

"The hypocrisy is disgraceful. The media failed the country, and they know it," Jackson added.

Social Media Weighs In

Public reaction online was a mix of sharp criticism, dark humor, and frustration.

"If you can't stay awake, sleep, Donald, resign already," one user wrote on X.

Another kept it short: "How embarrassing for him and us as Americans."

A third commenter tied it directly back to Trump's history of taunting Biden, writing that the man who spent years throwing around phrases like "Sleepy Joe" was now seemingly dozing off at his own Oval Office events and suggesting his late-night social media habits might be partly to blame.

Gavin Newsom Jumps In

California Governor Gavin Newsom, never one to pass up a political moment, made sure the story stayed in circulation. He posted about the incident multiple times, attaching video clips and dubbing the president "Dozy Don."

In one post, Newsom wrote "Asleep at the wheel" alongside a 16-second clip of Trump sitting with his eyes closed and head slightly bowed as a pharmaceutical executive addressed the room. He followed that up with a second video this one 23 seconds long that appeared to show Trump nodding off, jolting briefly awake, and then closing his eyes again. The caption: "DOZY DON IS BUSY DOZING."

The Age Question Cuts Both Ways

There's a larger, uncomfortable irony running through all of this.

Trump built much of his 2024 campaign around the idea that Biden was too old, too frail, and too diminished to lead the country. He argued loudly and repeatedly that Biden's visible health struggles should have kept him out of the race entirely.

Trump turns 79 this June, making him the oldest person ever elected to the American presidency. And now, with his 80th birthday just weeks away, some of the very same questions he weaponized against Biden are being directed squarely at him.

Whether these clips represent anything medically significant is a separate debate. But politically, the optics are undeniable and the contrast with his own past comments is proving very difficult for his supporters to defend.
