Melania Trump's absence in Beijing for summit explained and key role later in year

If Melania's absence from the trip drew attention, what arguably drew even more was the unexpected name on the passenger list heading to Beijing: Brett Ratner, the Hollywood director who co-produced the MELANIA documentary that Amazon acquired for a reported $75 million.

Ratner, 57, had been largely absent from Hollywood since 2017 after six women came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct against him. His return to the spotlight came through the Melania documentary a film that chronicles the 20 days leading up to the 2025 presidential inauguration as she prepared to step back into her role as First Lady.

What makes his presence on the trip particularly eyebrow-raising is the detail buried in the Washington Post's reporting: Melania herself reportedly had no idea Ratner would be boarding Air Force One for the Beijing journey. A source close to the First Lady confirmed she was not informed in advance that the director would be part of the US delegation.

Ratner joined a roster of high-profile business figures who accompanied Trump on the trip, including outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook and SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk a delegation that blurred the line between a diplomatic mission and a corporate summit.

Eric and Lara Trump Also Along for the Ride

The president didn't travel alone in family terms, either. His son Eric Trump and daughter-in-law Lara Trump were also part of the China delegation. Lara gave the public a glimpse of the group by sharing a photo on social media featuring several members of the traveling party.

One face in that photo caught people off guard a blonde woman who wasn't immediately recognizable to many viewers. Turns out, she's someone whose influence most Americans have encountered without even realizing it.

Meet the Woman Behind Trump's Truth Social Feed

The woman in the photo is believed to be Natalie Harp, who serves as President Trump's executive assistant. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Harp plays a central role in managing Trump's presence on Truth Social and is sometimes the one physically pressing "post" on his behalf.

Her behind-the-scenes role came into sharper focus this past Monday, when Trump's Truth Social account went into overdrive. In just one hour, the account fired off 17 posts a mix of original content and reshares from supporters calling him the "greatest president ever." By the time the burst of activity wound down, the account had published a total of 55 messages between 10:14 PM and 1:12 AM.

It's a reminder that in modern politics, even something as seemingly personal as a presidential social media account often has a team or at least a trusted assistant operating behind the curtain.

The Bigger Picture

Trump's 2026 China visit is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched diplomatic moments of his second term. The mix of senior officials, tech billionaires, a controversial Hollywood director, and family members making the trip paints an unusual picture of how this administration approaches statecraft.

As for Melania, her quiet but deliberate focus on domestic policy work signals that she's carving out her own lane on her own terms.
