Beijing Donald Trump's much-anticipated summit with Xi Jinping got off to a dramatic start Wednesday, not because of any diplomatic friction, but because of a physical altercation that broke out right in the middle of the room where the two world leaders were about to begin talks.
As Trump walked into the grand conference hall to take his seat across from President Xi, chaos erupted among the camera crews jostling for position. A camera hit the floor, bodies collided, and the unmistakable sound of someone cursing "get the f*** out of here" cut through the ceremonial atmosphere. It was the kind of scene you'd expect at a rowdy press scrum, not a landmark bilateral meeting between the world's two most powerful nations.
Trump Heaps Praise on Xi
Once the dust settled, Trump wasted no time setting a collegial tone. In his opening remarks, he described the meeting as an honour and reflected on the personal rapport he's built with Xi over the years. "Whenever we had a problem, we worked it out very quickly," he said, adding that the two leaders had a habit of simply picking up the phone when things got complicated.
He went further, calling Xi "a great leader" a compliment that raised a few eyebrows given the broader political backdrop and boasted that he'd brought America's top business executives along for the trip. "Only the top people here today to pay respects to you," Trump told his Chinese counterpart.
A Grand Welcome in Beijing
The summit had actually begun on a remarkably ceremonial note the day before, when Trump received a full state-style welcome in Beijing. Children lined the path waving flags, and Trump and Xi shared a handshake in front of assembled senior officials from both countries. Xi, in turn, greeted several high-ranking American officials in attendance.
Trump's delegation was notably star-studded. His son Eric Trump was there, as was his daughter-in-law Lara Trump. Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising presence was Elon Musk, whose relationship with the Trump administration has been described as strained in recent months. First Lady Melania Trump was not part of the trip.

Nicknames and Nerves
The visit hasn't been without its awkward undertones. Reports emerged that Chinese social media users had already coined an unflattering nickname for Trump following his arrival a detail that likely didn't go unnoticed by Beijing's image-conscious leadership.
Meanwhile, back in the US, Fox News host Sean Hannity aired an interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio just before the meetings began. Rubio used the platform to flag concerns about potential fault lines in the negotiations, signalling that despite the friendly optics, the talks ahead were anything but straightforward.
The stakes are high trade, Taiwan, technology, and geopolitical influence all hang in the balance. But for now, the headlines belong to a knocked-over camera and a president who called his rival a great leader before the first agenda item was even discussed.
