It's one thing to struggle in opinion polls. It's another when expectant parents across the country are quietly crossing your name off their baby lists. For Donald Trump, both appear to be happening at once.
According to fresh data from the Social Security Administration, analyzed by the outlet NOTUS, the name Donald has never been less popular in the United States than it is right now. Fewer than 400 babies born last year were given the name a striking figure when you consider that over 3.6 million children were born in the same period. That puts Donald at 690th on the national baby name rankings, sitting below names like Princeton and even Lawrence.
O'Donnell Makes the Hitler Comparison
MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell brought the story to television during his program The Last Word, connecting it directly to Trump's sliding public approval. "Donald is the new Adolf," he told viewers a sharp line that was sure to generate headlines.
O'Donnell went on to trace the historical parallel, explaining how the name Adolf, once relatively common in parts of the Western world, collapsed in popularity after Adolf Hitler's atrocities during World War II became fully understood by the public. The implication was clear: names carry cultural weight, and when a prominent figure becomes deeply controversial or despised, the name itself can become collateral damage.
He also didn't miss the chance at a touch of self-deprecating humor, noting that more babies were named Lawrence last year than Donald "a name I would not wish on anyone," he quipped.
A Name That Once Dominated
It wasn't always this way for the name Donald. According to NOTUS, the name hit its peak popularity back in 1934, when more than 30,400 American babies were registered with the name. It remained a consistent top-100 choice well into 1990, making it a genuinely common American name for over half a century.
The fall from that kind of cultural prominence to 690th place is, by any measure, a steep one.
Health Concerns Add to the Pressure
The naming story broke just hours after a separate wave of concern swept social media regarding Trump's behavior at a press conference in Pennsylvania. Fox News aired footage of the president reenacting a scene involving a transgender athlete moaning repeatedly and waving his fists while standing at the podium, even closing his eyes mid-display.
The clip spread quickly online, with many viewers expressing alarm rather than amusement. "What is wrong with him?" one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Others called for impeachment, with comments ranging from disbelief to outright frustration. "I had to check if this clip was real," wrote one user.
Whether it's his 34% approval rating, the baby name data, or the growing online chatter about his conduct, Trump is navigating one of the rougher stretches of his return to the White House and by the looks of it, the turbulence isn't settling down anytime soon.
He truly is a moron
