Pushing for Another U.S.-Hosted World Cup
Trump used his pre-match FOX Sports interview to float an idea he's clearly been thinking about: bringing the World Cup back to American soil sooner rather than later. He suggested to Infantino that future tournaments be split between two countries, floating the idea as a way to spread out reactions and reduce backlash from countries that don't get chosen. He said the numbers speak for themselves and that a renewed bid would likely come soon.
He stopped short of picking a side between Argentina and Spain, though he acknowledged how tough it is to bet against a player like Lionel Messi.
A Tournament Trump's Team Helped Shape
Trump's appearance at the final capped off a World Cup his administration has been closely tied to from the very beginning. That includes a tense phone call earlier this month, when Trump reportedly pushed Infantino to review a red card issued to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun a call that FIFA ultimately reversed.
The two even referenced that moment publicly. At Friday's FIFA reception held at Trump Tower, Trump told Infantino he'd made "another great decision," a clear nod to the overturned red card. That comment came just days after FOX reporter Jenny Taft found herself under fire online for her handling of the pre-final interview with the president.
