Trump's hands spark health concerns as he 'nods off' during key state dinner speech

Trump's Hands and Eyes Draw Scrutiny at Xi Jinping State Dinner

President Donald Trump found himself at the center of renewed health speculation this week after his appearance alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping at a White House state dinner caught the attention of observers online.

The two leaders met on Thursday, with Trump and First Lady Melania welcoming Xi and his wife, Madam Peng, outside the White House ahead of the formal event. But rather than focusing on the diplomatic occasion itself, much of the online conversation centered on the condition of Trump's hands.

Social Media Reacts to Hand Discoloration

Journalist Aaron Rupar was one of the first to publicly comment, posting images on X that highlighted noticeable discoloration on both of Trump's hands. He described the sight bluntly, saying the president's hands looked "rough" that evening.

Close-up photos appeared to back up the observation. The president's right hand looked especially affected, with what seemed to be concealer or makeup applied from the wrist all the way down to the fingers. His left hand showed a smaller, more contained patch of coverage.

This isn't the first time Trump's hands have become a talking point. Over the course of his second term, he's faced repeated questions about bruising on his hands and noticeable swelling around his ankles. Each time, the response from his medical team has been consistent a recent physician's evaluation concluded that the president remains in excellent overall health.

Eyes Closed During Dinner Remarks

The speculation didn't end with his hands. Later that evening, while addressing guests inside the White House, Trump seemed to struggle to stay fully alert at points during his remarks.

He used the speech to reflect on the "long history" shared between the US and China, and presented Xi with a statue of a bald eagle as a symbolic gift. "The bald eagle is a national symbol of the United States and an embodiment of the free and soaring spirit of America," he told the room, adding that he hoped it would find a fitting home in Beijing.

Because Xi's command of English is limited, Trump's speech was structured so that after each portion, an interpreter would step in and deliver the Mandarin translation. It was during these breaks while waiting for the translation to finish that Trump appeared to close his eyes repeatedly, standing at the podium in what onlookers described as an awkward, still posture.

This wouldn't be the first occasion where the 80-year-old president has been seen apparently dozing off or losing focus during official events, a pattern that has fueled ongoing debate about his stamina and alertness while in office.

White House Pushes Back on Health Concerns

The administration has consistently rejected any suggestion that Trump's health is in question. Back in June, when the Express raised similar concerns, White House spokesman Davis Ingle offered a pointed response, arguing that Trump's mental sharpness and energy levels far exceed anything seen during the prior administration.

Ingle went further, accusing Democrats and mainstream media outlets of having concealed the health struggles of former President Joe Biden during his time in office. He described Trump as "the sharpest and most accessible President in American history," insisting the president continues to work tirelessly to deliver on his agenda.

A Pattern of Public Scrutiny

Thursday's dinner wasn't an isolated incident. Earlier that same day, Trump's balance came under the microscope again when he appeared to lean or veer to one side while walking the red carpet ahead of Xi's arrival just one more moment in a string of public appearances that have kept questions about his health circulating.

As Trump continues his second term, these episodes seem likely to keep prompting public debate, even as his team maintains there's nothing to be concerned about.
