The administration’s decision to ease part of its sanctions on Russia has set off a fresh round of debate, and the energy secretary has now stepped in to explain it publicly.
What Happened
Congress passed the sanctions package, and Trump signed it into law in September. This past Friday, he took a step in the other direction with an executive order stating that suspending some of the measures was in America’s national interest. The move came while Trump is reportedly at odds with Zelensky, which has added to the controversy.
Zelensky did not hide his disappointment. He said it was unfortunate that the United States had decided to “completely disregard” the sanctions, a sign of how sensitive the issue remains in Kyiv.
Wright Makes the Case on Fox News
On Sunday night, Wright took the administration’s message to a friendly audience. During his appearance with Trey Gowdy, the host pressed him directly, asking what he would say to Ukrainians looking for some understanding of the decision. Gowdy also noted that the country faces a very cold winter and that the war has dragged on for a long time.
After a short pause, Wright said America’s sympathies are with the Ukrainian people. He said he regularly meets with Ukrainian officials and that the U.S. is doing what it can to protect their infrastructure, including technology support, parts and repairs, and liquefied natural gas shipments from the United States.
He then turned to the sanctions themselves. According to Wright, Trump’s actions are being misread. “We are not helping the Russians,” he said, arguing that Russia exported no diesel that day and therefore earned nothing from it. His explanation was that if Russia changes its behavior and resumes diesel exports, the U.S. would allow that fuel to flow into global markets.
A Narrow Exception, Wright Says
Wright stressed that the arrangement does not cover Russia’s wider oil exports. In his words, it applies only to diesel, a product Moscow is not currently shipping because of the war. He closed by saying Trump is exploring every possible angle to end what he called a horrific conflict, and that the goal is peace.
Viewers Push Back on X
Not everyone watching agreed. Reaction on X was largely critical. One user wrote that there was no misunderstanding and accused Trump of favoring Vladimir Putin. Another claimed Russia was close to being unable to continue the war before this decision. A third called Wright’s explanation “tortured logic” and said Putin seemed to be influencing Trump, while another simply said the move looked a lot like helping Russia.
What to Watch Next
For now, the administration’s position is that the diesel exception is limited and conditional. Whether that reassures lawmakers, Ukraine and the public remains to be seen, especially as winter approaches and the war continues with no clear end in sight.
