The way Zampolli tells it, nothing dramatic happened. His appointment was always meant to run for a year, and the White House had already stretched it by roughly half a year. In his telling, the clock simply ran out and he is moving on.
In the Affaritaliani interview, he described his bond with Trump as strong and said he plans to go back to private work, including helping Italian companies do business abroad. His social media message struck a similar note of loyalty, closing with a line about how Trump had changed his life once and had just done it again.
What Officials and Reporters Say
The official version is less gracious. According to CNN, a U.S. official said Zampolli was told his special envoy status had been withdrawn and that his government employment had ended. That is a long way from a natural expiration.
Politico had already laid some groundwork. Its reporting described a drawn-out dispute between Zampolli and Christopher Landau, the deputy secretary of state. The two reportedly disagreed over the limits of Zampolli’s authority, the conversations he was having with officials from other countries, and the duties that came with his title. Emails cited in that coverage suggested the tension had been rising over time.
Zampolli rejects the idea that he went beyond his remit. For now, neither Trump nor the first lady has said anything publicly about a rift between them and their longtime acquaintance.
How Zampolli Got the Job
Trump named Zampolli special envoy for global partnerships in March 2025, pointing to his work with international initiatives and cultural organizations. It was not Zampolli’s first brush with Trump-world officialdom. During Trump’s first term, he sat on the board of the Kennedy Center.
The Night the Trumps Met
Zampolli’s name is tied to one of the best-known meet-cute stories in American politics. A former modeling agent, he worked with Melania in the 1990s. In September 1998, he hosted a New York Fashion Week party at the Kit Kat Club in Manhattan.
Trump was reportedly there with another date when he noticed Melania Knauss, a Slovenian-born model working in the United States at the time. She declined to give him her phone number and asked for his instead.
The couple married in Palm Beach, Florida, in January 2005, and their son Barron was born the following year.
Who Gets the Credit?
Zampolli has always said he made the introduction. Melania’s memoir confirms she met her future husband at that event, but it does not name Zampolli as the person who brought them together. It is a small gap, but it shows how contested even a well-loved origin story can be.
Whether Zampolli’s departure was a routine end of term or a pushout, he is publicly keeping the peace with the president, and that may be the part that matters most to him.
