Donald Trump awkwardly snubbed Melania on her birthday before tense 60 Minutes moment

There's a certain irony in being the most powerful person in the world and still forgetting or at least not publicly acknowledging your wife's birthday. That's exactly the situation Donald Trump found himself in this past Saturday when Melania quietly turned 56 and her husband spent the day posting about almost everything else imaginable.

A Busy Day on Truth Social Just Not for Melania

Throughout April 26, Trump was anything but silent online. He weighed in on the shocking incident involving 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, who was accused of opening fire near the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. He floated the idea of rebranding ICE agents as "NICE agents." He shared a photo of a sign bearing the name "Donald J Trump Bridge." And in what might be the most on-brand post of the day, he congratulated country singer Lee Greenwood famous for God Bless the USA and his wife Kim on becoming grandparents.

"They were with me from the very beginning total loyalty, and Lee gave me the greatest walk-on song of all time, nothing even close!!!" Trump wrote. "Congratulations to you both!!! Love, President DJT."

Warm words for the Greenwoods. Silence for the First Lady.

The Birthday Mention That Almost Didn't Happen

It wasn't until Trump sat down with CBS for a 60 Minutes interview that Melania's birthday got any airtime at all and even then, it took the host to bring it up. Anchor Norah O'Donnell gently nudged him, asking, "I understand today is the first lady's birthday? Is that right?"

Trump confirmed it and offered a belated on-air wish. He then explained the couple's schedule had kept things low-key. "By the time we get back here, it's like around 12:00, and I said, 'Happy birthday, darling,'" he told O'Donnell.

Whether that explanation satisfied anyone watching is another matter entirely.

Not the First "Working Birthday" for Melania

This isn't the first time Melania's birthday has taken a backseat to bigger events. Last year, she spent April 26 in Vatican City attending the funeral of Pope Francis. At the time, Trump told reporters he planned to celebrate with her aboard Air Force One, calling it a "working birthday."

It's becoming something of a pattern.

Melania Prefers It Quiet And That Might Be the Point

To be fair, those close to the First Lady say grand public gestures aren't really her style. A source speaking to PEOPLE magazine described her preference plainly: "Melania likes a low-key celebration with family and that, I believe, is her plan for this year's birthday."

So perhaps the lack of fanfare was less of a snub and more of a reflection of who she is a woman who has always kept a certain distance from the spotlight, even when it shines directly on the White House.

Still, a Truth Social post probably wouldn't have hurt.
