The war of words between the Trump family and Jimmy Kimmel has escalated sharply, with both the President and First Lady now publicly demanding the late-night host lose his job over what they're calling dangerous and irresponsible commentary.
What Kimmel Said
It started with Kimmel's Thursday night show on April 23, where he performed a satirical monologue imagining what he might have said had he been chosen to host the White House Correspondents' Dinner. During the bit, a digitally altered clip made it appear as though Melania Trump and her son Barron were sitting in the studio audience something Trump later pointed out with visible anger, calling it a "fake video."
The joke that drew the most fire was Kimmel's line directed at the First Lady: that she had "a glow like an expectant widow." Edgy by late-night standards, the remark took on a far more uncomfortable meaning just 48 hours later when a man armed with multiple weapons was intercepted attempting to force his way into the Correspondents' Dinner while the President and First Lady were in attendance.
Melania Fires Back First
On April 27, Melania posted a pointed statement on X, describing Kimmel's words as "hateful and violent rhetoric" designed to divide the country rather than entertain it. She argued that his brand of commentary isn't comedy it's corrosive, and it feeds the political toxicity already gripping the nation.
She also went directly after ABC, questioning how many times the network's leadership would continue shielding Kimmel from consequences. "A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him," she wrote, adding that it was time for the network to take a real stand.
Trump Turns Up the Heat
Trump's Truth Social post followed within hours and pulled no punches. He took issue not just with the joke itself but with the fabricated footage of his family, calling the segment "really shocking." He then connected the timing of the joke to the armed incident at the Correspondents' Dinner, describing the attacker as a "lunatic" with an "obvious and sinister reason" for being there.
Trump wrapped up his post with a direct demand: "Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC." He signed off as "President DONALD J. TRUMP" a touch that underscored just how seriously he was treating the matter.
Not Kimmel's First Controversy
This isn't the first time Kimmel has found himself in seriously hot water over a joke. Back in September 2025, his show was pulled off the air indefinitely after he made remarks about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk and suggested Kirk's death was being exploited for political gain by right-wing figures. Public backlash was swift and intense. The show eventually returned after about a week off, but the incident left a lasting mark on Kimmel's public standing.
Silence from Kimmel
As of now, Jimmy Kimmel has not responded to either Melania or Trump's social media posts. ABC has also not issued any public statement regarding the calls for his dismissal. Whether the network addresses the controversy or whether this, like past firestorms, blows over without consequence remains to be seen.
