Moment Sky News crew ‘pulled away’ from King Charles during live TV bombshell

It wasn't your typical royal photo opportunity. When King Charles came face to face with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during the royal couple's ongoing U.S. state visit, the cameras caught more than just a handshake.

Sky News footage showed a visibly crowded scene as journalists and camera crews jostled to get close to the two figures. The King's press secretary stepped in quickly, his voice cutting clearly through the noise: "Let's go, let's go, let's go. Right the way back. Right the way back." The press was pushed further away, and a Sky News correspondent on the ground confirmed to the studio that the media were being deliberately moved back from the meeting.

The Diamond Question Hanging in the Air

Before the meeting even took place, Mamdani had already made headlines. At a press conference earlier in the day, the mayor was candid about what he'd say to the King given the chance: he would urge the British royal family to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India.

The Koh-i-Noor is one of the most historically significant and contested gems in the world, embedded in the Crown Jewels and long claimed by India as something taken during the colonial era. Mamdani didn't shy away from the topic, saying plainly that returning it would be the right thing to do.

However, the meeting itself was organized for a very different purpose to pay tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks. Whether Mamdani chose to bring up the diamond in that setting, or kept the conversation on the intended agenda, has not been confirmed.

Viewers React Online

The clip made its way across social media quickly, and the public had plenty to say about it.

Some were charmed by the chemistry between Charles and the mayor. "Charles looks genuinely happy talking to an actually intelligent politician," one viewer wrote. Another took a dig at the current political climate in the U.S., posting: "Trump won't like seeing Charles laughing and chatting warmly with Mamdani. He probably thinks they're laughing about him."

Others focused more on the press scuffle itself. "The press started going absolutely mad they had to be moved back!" one person commented. A more measured response came from another viewer who pointed out: "There are strict security protocols about how close unauthorized individuals can get to a head of state. His own protection team would enforce that regardless."

A Visit Already Full of Moments

The King and Queen Camilla's U.S. trip has been closely watched from the start, with every interaction drawing commentary. The brief but buzzy meeting with Mamdani complete with warm body language, a press pack getting scolded, and an unanswered question about a famous diamond gave the media plenty to work with.

Whether or not the Koh-i-Noor ever came up behind closed doors, one thing is certain: this particular royal engagement won't be forgotten quickly.
