President Trump and Melania evacuated as gunshots fired at White House Correspondents' Dinner

It was supposed to be a historic night. For the first time since returning to the Oval Office, President Donald Trump showed up to the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner a tradition he had skipped entirely during his first term and through the early stretch of his second. But what started as a milestone evening quickly turned into something no one in that room will forget.

A gunman opened fire inside the Washington Hilton hotel, sending the glittering gala into full-blown panic.

"Everyone Hid Under the Table"

The moment the shots rang out, the response was instant. Secret Service agents flooded the banquet hall, weapons drawn, cutting through the aisles at speed. Trump was surrounded and escorted off the stage alongside Melania Trump and Karoline Leavitt, who is currently heavily pregnant. The rest of the room dropped to the floor, taking cover beneath tables as the venue locked down.

Irish Star reporter Jack Hobbs, who was inside the hall when it happened, described the scene in real time. There was immediate chaos, he said a wave of panic followed by confusion as people tried to make sense of what was unfolding around them. Somewhere in the background, a voice could be heard repeatedly shouting "USA" and "God bless America" amid the disorder.

Law enforcement sources indicated the shooter fired roughly five to eight shots before being stopped near the main security screening area. The suspect was taken into custody, with the FBI's National Capital Response Squad formally confirming the arrest in a statement posted to X.

Trump Responds from Truth Social

About an hour after the incident, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to address the nation. He praised the speed and courage of the Secret Service and law enforcement, writing that the shooter had been apprehended and that he had personally recommended the event continue though he made clear the final call rested with law enforcement.

In a follow-up post at 9:36 p.m., Trump confirmed he was leaving the hotel at the request of law enforcement and heading back to the White House, where he planned to hold a press briefing within 30 minutes. He reassured the public that Melania, Vice President JD Vance, and all Cabinet members were safe and unharmed. He also confirmed that the correspondents' dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days.

Secret Service Confirms All Protectees Safe

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service's chief of communications, issued a formal statement just after 9:20 p.m., confirming that the agency was working alongside the Metropolitan Police Department to investigate the shooting near the venue's magnetometer screening zone. He noted that while the president and first lady were safe, the condition of others involved had not yet been confirmed and that the situation remained active.

WHCA President Weijia Jiang, for her part, briefly announced mid-evening that the program would resume a message that drew applause from an understandably shaken crowd.

A Night That Will Be Remembered Differently

This was meant to mark Trump's re-engagement with a Washington tradition he had long kept at arm's length. He had attended the dinner previously once in 2011 and again in 2015 but as a private citizen, not as commander-in-chief. His appearance on Saturday was seen as a notable shift in tone.

Instead, the evening became something else entirely. Investigations remain ongoing, and while no details about the shooter's identity or motive have been officially released, the incident has already sent shockwaves through the capital. Trump, ever defiant, made his position clear: the show, as far as he was concerned, should go on.
