It started as a throwback clip from over two decades ago, but by Saturday it had turned into one of the weekend's most talked-about moments online. A resurfaced interview of Donald and Melania Trump from the 1999 Kentucky Derby went viral just as the 2026 race was getting underway and it wasn't for the horse racing.
The Clip That Caught Everyone Off Guard
The footage, which surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), shows a much younger Trump decades before his presidency being interviewed trackside at Churchill Downs. Standing beside him was Melania, his girlfriend at the time, then in her twenties and still going by her maiden name, Knauss.
When the reporter asked Trump who the woman next to him was, he didn't miss a beat: "This is Melania Knauss from New York, from Austria."
One problem Melania is Slovenian, born and raised in Slovenia, which at the time was part of Yugoslavia. Austria and Slovenia share a border, but they are very much two different countries, and that distinction wasn't lost on viewers.
Social Media Pounced
The clip spread fast, and the reactions were swift. "Trump saying she's from Austria what a blunder!" one user wrote. Another kept it simple: "Melania is not from Austria!" A third went a bit further, sarcastically noting, "He even lied about where she's from." Others were more amused than outraged one commenter simply wrote, "From Austria??? She's Slovenian lmao."
What fueled the mockery wasn't just the error itself, but the sheer confidence with which Trump said it. No stumbling, no uncertainty just a completely wrong answer delivered like a fact.
A Relationship Still in Its Early Chapters
At the time of the interview, Trump and Melania had been together for a couple of years but were not yet married. They tied the knot in 2005, and their son Barron now 20 came shortly after.
Watching the old footage, Melania appears relaxed and genuinely engaged, smiling as Trump held court with the reporter. It's a noticeably different energy from the composed, often unreadable demeanor she's carried through her years in the public spotlight as First Lady.
More Than Just the Geography Gaffe
The interview itself covered a bit more ground than just introductions. The reporter also asked Trump whether he had any interest in buying Churchill Downs the legendary venue that hosts the Derby every year. Trump denied having any plans to do so, though he couldn't resist adding that if he ever did, he "couldn't imagine a better investment." He said he was there that day simply to support a friend.
The Contrast of Then and Now
The lighthearted nature of the clip has drawn comparisons to how Melania presents herself today. During both of Trump's presidential terms his first running from 2017 to 2021, and his current one beginning in 2025 she has often appeared withdrawn and difficult to read in public settings. Analysts and commentators have frequently interpreted her expressions as signs of discomfort or emotional distance.
Behavioral specialist Shelly Dar pushed back on that narrative in comments to The Mirror U.S., suggesting that what people read as sadness or worry is more likely a conscious effort on Melania's part to keep her inner world private while living such a public life. "What we're really seeing is her restraint," Dar explained.
The Derby Backdrop
The timing of the clip's resurfacing added an extra layer of attention to it. It emerged right as coverage of the 2026 Kentucky Derby was underway a broadcast that was briefly interrupted when a medical emergency required immediate attention. Adding to the drama of the day, one horse rolled over and threw its rider just moments before the main race began.
Still, for a good chunk of the internet, the real story of the weekend wasn't what happened on the track it was a 27-year-old clip of Trump confidently getting his future wife's home country completely wrong.
