Donald Trump had 3-word response for Piers Morgan about King Charles

It wasn't long ago that the bond between the United States and the United Kingdom was looking decidedly strained. Tensions between Donald Trump and Prime Minister Keir Starmer had been simmering for months, casting a shadow over the so-called Special Relationship. But King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Washington this week seems to have changed the temperature considerably and Trump himself is singing the King's praises.

Speaking through a text to Piers Morgan, Trump was effusive about how the visit played out. Morgan shared the exchange on X, revealing that the President described King Charles as "a great guy" and called the state dinner "a wonderful evening, very special." Morgan added his own take, writing: "I think the Monarch and Queen Camilla single-handedly repaired the Special Relationship. Congrats, Your Majesties!"

A Visit That Delivered Real Results

Beyond the warm words, the state visit produced some tangible outcomes. In what was widely seen as a symbolic and economic olive branch, Trump announced the removal of US tariffs and restrictions on Scotch whiskey, specifically citing it as a gesture made "in honour of the King and Queen." For many observers, that kind of concrete policy movement tied directly to a diplomatic visit signals something more meaningful than just good optics.

The four-day visit wrapped up earlier this week, with Charles and Camilla returning home to the UK after what most commentators are calling an unqualified success. Given the rocky diplomatic backdrop leading up to it, that's no small achievement.

Public Reaction: Mostly Glowing, With a Catch

Reaction to Morgan's post was largely positive, with many social media users quick to credit the royal couple for pulling off something Westminster hasn't managed to do in quite some time. One commenter wrote that Charles had "conquered" with a "brilliant visit," while another noted that the King and Queen brought "a warm and friendly feeling to Americans." A third acknowledged the success but added a pointed caveat: "They've done brilliant work repairing a rocky relationship, however there is still Sir Keir…"

That last remark captures a sentiment that's hard to ignore. While the royals may have smoothed things over at the personal and symbolic level, the political friction between Trump and Starmer remains very much alive.

Trump on Starmer: Still Not Impressed

Trump has been consistently blunt about how he views the Prime Minister compared to the King. In a recent interview with Sky News, he drew a sharp contrast between the two, saying Charles is "a much different person than your prime minister" and adding that Starmer needs to learn a different approach if he wants better results in dealing with the US.

Asked directly whether the royal visit might soften his relationship with Starmer, Trump gave a characteristically layered answer. He said the relationship is "very good" in general but then pivoted sharply, calling Starmer's decisions on immigration and energy "tragic mistakes."

So while King Charles may have helped thaw the ice between two old allies, the road between Downing Street and the White House still has a few bumps left to navigate. For now though, the royals have walked away from Washington with their diplomatic mission very much accomplished.
