GB News halts show for major Trump breaking news announcement

It was supposed to be a standard late-night news run. But GB News had other plans on the early hours of Saturday, May 2nd, when anchor Ben Leo broke away from the scheduled format to bring viewers a developing story straight out of Washington.

Trump, speaking at what appeared to be a casual White House gathering, made a comment that nobody in the room or at home quite expected. While praising an architect of Cuban origin for his work, the former and current president made a sharp left turn into foreign policy territory, telling the room that the US would be taking over Cuba "almost immediately."

What Exactly Did Trump Say?

The clip, aired by GB News, showed Trump in characteristically off-the-cuff form. He introduced the architect by noting his "beautiful Hispanic flair" and Cuban roots, before pivoting to say the US would soon be moving in on the island nation.

He went further, painting a vivid some might say theatrical picture of how it would all unfold. According to Trump, on the way back from Iran, the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier would cruise in and park about 100 yards offshore. His prediction? Cuba would simply surrender on the spot.

The room laughed. Trump pressed on, insisting he likes to "finish a job" before moving on to the next one.

Social Media Reacted Instantly

It didn't take long for the clip to spread across X, formerly Twitter, where opinions broke sharply in two directions.

A good number of users were genuinely alarmed. One person demanded that Trump consult the American public before taking any such action. Another raised the point that if the US military has struggled to subdue the Houthis in Yemen, Cuba a nation with a long history of resisting foreign intervention  would be an entirely different challenge. "The Cubans aren't going to go down without a fight," one user warned bluntly, adding that an attempted invasion could result in serious American casualties.

On the other side of the debate, plenty of viewers were rolling their eyes at what they saw as yet another case of people taking Trump too literally. "He was clearly joking, you morons," one commenter wrote. Others echoed the sentiment, asking critics if they had any sense of humor at all.

Cuba Is Already Bracing Itself

What makes Trump's remarks more than just dinner table theater is the fact that Cuba has already been responding seriously to the possibility of a US military move.

Back on April 16th, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the nation at an event marking the 65th anniversary of the Cuban revolution. The occasion, held during what he described as a period of "special tension" with Washington, carried a pointed message for the Cuban people: be prepared.

Díaz-Canel made it clear that while Cuba does not want a confrontation, it will not back down from one either. "We don't want it, but it is our duty to prepare to prevent it and, if it is inevitable, to win," he said.

Pentagon Quietly Stepping Up

Adding yet another layer to the story, USA Today reported that military planning for a possible Pentagon-led operation in Cuba has been quietly gaining momentum behind the scenes. That's not the kind of detail that gets brushed off as a punchline.

Whether Trump's comments were meant in jest or were a rare unscripted reveal of actual intent, one thing is clear the tension between Washington and Havana is real, it is building, and both sides appear to be taking it seriously, even if the internet is still arguing about whether it was all just a joke.
