When Robert Hardman walked into the White House recently, he probably expected to talk books. What he didn't expect was for the President of the United States to offer a candid, eye-roll-included verdict on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Hardman, a well-known royal biographer, was invited to the White House during King Charles III's official four-day State Visit to the US a visit Trump described as having gone very well. Speaking on GB News, Hardman recounted how the two men ended up in a surprisingly frank exchange about the royals.
Trump the Anglophile
By Hardman's account, Trump was in genuinely high spirits about the visit. "He was very pleased with how it had gone," the author recalled. The President reportedly spoke about his admiration for the King, his excitement about Prince William's future as monarch, and his enthusiasm for the Princess of Wales. Given that Trump is reportedly half British himself, his deep fondness for the monarchy didn't come as a total surprise to Hardman.
"He's a passionate royalist and a huge Anglophile," the author noted.
The Harry and Meghan Moment
Things got more interesting when Trump brought up Prince Harry. According to Hardman, Trump asked whether Harry could ever stage a "comeback" within the royal fold. Hardman told him he didn't think that was likely at least not in the current circumstances.
Trump's response? A pointed "Boy, that wife of his," followed by remarks about what Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, had supposedly done to Harry all punctuated with a roll of the eyes.
Hardman's read on the moment was that Trump felt the Sussexes had essentially thrown away something most people would never take for granted. "It was the fact that he felt they had thrown it all away," he explained, before noting that Trump's overall mood about the royal visit remained upbeat throughout.
Harry and Meghan stepped away from their senior royal duties back in January 2020, relocating to California to build an independent life outside the palace structure.
Public Reaction: Not Everyone Was Impressed
The comments didn't land without a degree of skepticism. GB News viewers took to social media pretty quickly after the segment aired. One person wrote on X that while the quote was interesting, "the real story is probably more complicated than one quote." Another was more blunt, remarking that it was telling to know the US President was engaging in what they called "cheap gossip."
Whether you take Trump's comments as a genuine reflection of his views or simply the kind of offhand remark that happens in casual conversation, one thing is clear the Harry and Meghan saga continues to draw opinions from the highest offices in the world, not just the British tabloids.
