It wasn't exactly the image the White House was going for. During what was supposed to be an energetic showcase of pro-business policy, President Donald Trump appeared to briefly fall asleep on his feet while standing alongside his own Cabinet member at a small-business summit Monday.
SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler was delivering a detailed rundown of the administration's economic agenda regulatory rollbacks, tax relief measures, and support programs for small business owners when cameras caught Trump's eyelids drooping. His head didn't fall, and he didn't stumble, but his eyes closed, flickered, and then shot open the instant Loeffler mentioned his name.
Social Media Had a Field Day
The clip spread fast. One user on X posted the video with the blunt caption calling Trump's brain "vanilla pudding," while others piled on with their own takes. Some questioned what would happen if he ever truly lost his balance "He's gonna do this one time and fall right on the floor," one commenter warned. Others were more philosophical about it, with one writing, "The only time Trump isn't lying is when he falls asleep at public events."
Not everyone was critical, though. A handful of users defended the president, arguing it was nothing more than a brief mental drift. "It's a catnap. He was listening well, okay, he was daydreaming, but still," one supporter wrote.
This Isn't the First Time
What made the moment particularly notable is that it wasn't an isolated incident. Back in March, Trump was seen nodding off during a public appearance in Memphis, Tennessee and that episode was arguably more prolonged.
Trump had traveled to Memphis to tout his administration's crime task force, boldly claiming the city would soon have virtually "no crime" thanks to his efforts. But while other speakers held the floor, Trump was filmed dropping his head to one side with his eyes closed for what appeared to be a continuous 30-second stretch.
The Memphis footage triggered its own flood of online commentary. Several users flipped Trump's old nickname for Joe Biden right back at him, chanting "Sleepy Don" in the comments. Others suggested it was time for a quieter lifestyle. "Maybe it's time to send him off to the retirement community so he can rest," one user wrote. Another tied the fatigue to Trump's busy weekend of golf outings and a controversial public remark in which he said he was "glad" that former FBI Director Robert Mueller who led the Russia investigation during Trump's first term had passed away.
Age and Optics
At 78, Trump is the oldest sitting president in American history, a fact that opposition figures have repeatedly pointed to when raising questions about fitness for office. The Biden camp spent years fielding similar criticism over the former president's age and occasional public stumbles criticism that Trump himself was never shy about amplifying.
Now, with clips of Trump appearing to drift off circulating across platforms, the shoe seems to be on the other foot. Whether it amounts to anything politically remains to be seen, but the optics a president closing his eyes mid-event while a Cabinet member sings his praises are unlikely to fade quietly from the news cycle.
