The 55-year-old musician, born Robert James Ritchie, was spotted by TMZ on the streets of D.C. on June 14 the same day President Trump celebrated his 80th birthday. Reporters lobbed him an easy one: what did he get the president for his birthday? Kid Rock didn't bite. He kept signing autographs, snapping photos with fans, and moving right along like the question never happened.
TMZ tried again later, rewording it "Did you send a text, a gift, anything like that?" Still nothing. Just silence and a polite sidestep.
The National Anthem Snub That Started It All
For many fans and observers, the real story wasn't what Kid Rock said it was what didn't happen. Given his deep ties to Trump and his history of performing at politically charged events, a lot of people fully expected him to headline the patriotic moment and belt out the national anthem on the White House South Lawn. Instead, that honor went to Zac Brown Band.
The internet didn't waste any time drawing conclusions.
"Kid Rock must really be on the MAGA s--t list to get passed over for Zac Brown," one user posted on X. Others piled on with jokes and genuine curiosity "Did Kid Rock not get invited?" and "Lmao they leave Kid Rock for streetz" were among the reactions making the rounds.
When the TMZ clip later surfaced on X, it confirmed he had in fact attended with his son, Robert James Ritchie Jr., 33, by his side. But being in the crowd is a far cry from being on the stage, and plenty of people noticed the difference.
Not Everyone Was Impressed by His No. 1 Ranking
Kid Rock's bold claim that UFC Freedom 250 was the greatest sporting event in American history didn't land well with everyone. Critics were quick to point out what they felt were more historically significant moments in U.S. sports.
"We just had an incredibly exciting NBA Finals, and this guy says this? He's clearly never been to a real sporting event," one person wrote. Another bluntly noted that Kid Rock "hasn't been relevant in 20 years." Someone else quipped that apparently bar brawls now officially outrank baseball as the national pastime a jab at the UFC's mixed martial arts format. A more measured commenter pointed out that no matter the venue, the event could hardly top something like the 1932 Olympics on American soil.
A Star-Studded Guest List With a Lot of Empty Seats
Trump had reportedly extended invitations to a long list of Hollywood and sports heavyweights. Names like Adam Sandler, Tom Brady, Dwayne Johnson, and Jared Leto were on the list but according to reports, most of them passed on the invite.
Those who did show up made for an interesting crowd. WWE legends Triple H and Roman Reigns were spotted in the bleachers. The entire Trump family turned out as well Donald Trump Jr. with his new wife Bettina Anderson, a rare public appearance from Barron Trump, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Tiffany Trump, and Eric and Lara Trump. Even Melania Trump attended, which stood out given that she typically skips UFC events. Back in April, when the president caught a fight in Miami, it was Ivanka who joined him not the First Lady.
The venue itself was a spectacle. Rows of bleachers were erected around an octagon ring planted right on the South Lawn, accommodating around 5,000 guests and military personnel.
The $700,000 Grass Problem
Of course, hosting a major combat sports event on the White House lawn doesn't come without a price and in this case, that price is steep. UFC CEO Dana White is reportedly staring down a bill of around $700,000 just to restore the South Lawn grass after the event. The lawn had to be flattened to accommodate the ring setup and the massive overhead structure known as "The Claw," leaving the turf significantly damaged in the process.
White had openly acknowledged the scale of the challenge months earlier. Speaking to Sports Business Journal last October, he didn't sugarcoat it describing the White House event as the most difficult thing his organization had ever attempted. He noted that he'd just come off staging events at the Sphere and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas neither of which he particularly enjoys and that an outdoor event on the White House lawn was an even tougher proposition.
Whether the grass grows back smoothly or not, the event is now part of the record books. And somewhere in the crowd, Kid Rock watched it all quietly.
