It's one of those fun little footnotes in pop culture history a future U.S. president casually pointing a lost kid toward the hotel lobby while Christmas chaos unfolded around him. But how exactly did Donald Trump end up in one of the most-watched holiday films of all time? The answer is equal parts business deal and Hollywood compromise.
A Hotel, a Fee, and a Famous Condition
When the production team behind Home Alone 2 chose the Plaza Hotel as a central filming location, they probably didn't anticipate that the building's owner would come as part of the package. Trump, who held ownership of the Plaza from 1988 to 1995, reportedly made it clear that his cooperation wasn't unconditional.
Chris Columbus, who directed the film, recalled the exchange plainly: "We paid the fee, but he also said 'the only way you can use the Plaza is if I'm in the movie.'" Rather than scout a new location, the team simply agreed. The result was a brief but oddly iconic moment Trump directing Macaulay Culkin's character Kevin down the hall and to the left, wrapped up in just seven seconds of footage.
Columbus acknowledged that the cameo landed well with audiences, becoming something of a crowd-pleasing moment during holiday screenings. But he also didn't sugarcoat how it came about, saying Trump "did bully his way into the movie."
Trump Tells a Very Different Story
Fast forward to December 2023, and Trump pushed back on that version of events pretty firmly. Taking to his Truth Social platform, he insisted he had no real desire to do the cameo in the first place and only agreed after persistent requests from the filmmakers.
"I was very busy, and didn't want to do it," he wrote. "They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history!"
He also raised what he clearly considered an airtight defense: if the crew felt pressured or unwilling, why did they keep the scene in for over three decades? "Because I was, and still am, great for the movie, that's why!" he added.
Whether you believe Columbus or Trump likely depends on who you're already inclined to trust but either way, the cameo stayed in, and it's still being talked about more than 30 years later.
A Bigger Pop Culture Footprint
The Home Alone 2 appearance wasn't Trump's only brush with Hollywood during that era. He also showed up in episodes of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Sex and the City, as well as the comedy film Zoolander building a reputation as a recognizable, if brief, fixture in '90s and early 2000s pop culture.
It's a strange piece of history to look back on now, given everything that followed. But for a lot of people, that quick hallway exchange with Kevin McCallister remains one of the more surreal "wait, was that really him?" moments in Christmas movie history and Trump, who turned 80 on June 14, clearly has no regrets about it.
Maybe he should have stayed in movies. I have a feeling some of the actors could have "calmed" him
