Six times Donald Trump 'fell asleep' in public, from the Oval Office to Buckingham Palace

For a man who once boasted about needing only four hours of sleep a night, Donald Trump seems to be catching up on lost time in the most public places imaginable.

As the US president approaches his 80th birthday this Sunday, a growing collection of videos and eyewitness accounts show him apparently nodding off during events where staying alert isn't just expected it's kind of the whole point.

The Oval Office Nap That Went Viral

Just this week, Trump was filmed at his own press conference in the Oval Office with his eyes shut and his body leaning slightly to one side, before seemingly snapping back to attention. The footage spread rapidly across social media.

What makes it particularly striking is the context. The press conference was about lifting restrictions on commercial fishing in protected Pacific waters not exactly the dullest topic for a sitting president. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy was mid-sentence, speaking about fishing's importance to the American economy, when Trump appeared to check out entirely.

Caught Snoozing at the NBA Finals

A day earlier, Trump was courtside at Madison Square Garden watching the New York Knicks face the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. He was seated alongside Knicks owner James Dolan and his granddaughter Kai Trump.

Video from the game shows the president's eyes closing and his head tilting forward for roughly 45 seconds the kind of slow, unmistakable drift that's hard to explain away. He then appeared to jolt awake.

Dolan, to his credit, came out swinging in Trump's defense. Appearing on WFAN's The Carton Show, he pushed back firmly: "I was with him the whole time. We were talking the whole time. Unless he was sleepwalking, he was very much awake."

Trump himself has offered his own explanation for these moments. In a January interview with The Wall Street Journal, he insisted he doesn't actually fall asleep he just closes his eyes occasionally. "It's very relaxing to me," he said, adding that photographers sometimes catch him mid-blink and make it look worse than it is.

A Memorial Day Moment That Worried Doctors

Perhaps the most talked-about incident came at Arlington National Cemetery during Memorial Day observances in May. Footage from the ceremony appeared to show Trump nodding off during what is one of the most solemn events on the presidential calendar.

The clip caught the attention of Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist who spoke about it on CNN. His assessment was blunt. He said the president shows signs of severe daytime sleepiness, noting that Trump has reportedly appeared to fall asleep multiple times in the Oval Office and in Cabinet meetings. Dr. Reiner also raised broader concerns, pointing out that chronic sleep deprivation in older individuals can increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Marco Rubio's Praise Couldn't Keep Him Awake

Back in December 2025, a lengthy White House Cabinet meeting turned into an unintentional highlight reel. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was delivering what can only be described as an enthusiastic tribute to Trump's foreign policy legacy crediting him with transforming American diplomacy for the first time in four decades.

It was, by any measure, exactly the kind of speech a president would want to stay awake for. Trump's eyes had other ideas. Video from the two-hour session shows them slowly closing as Rubio continued heaping on the praise.

Falling Asleep During His Own Criminal Trial

In April 2024, Trump was seated in a Manhattan courtroom facing 34 felony counts related to allegedly falsifying business records charges connected to a $130,000 payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election, reportedly intended to keep her quiet about an alleged affair.

Journalists inside the courtroom noted that Trump appeared to fall asleep multiple times during the proceedings. New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman wrote in the paper's live blog that Trump's head kept dropping and his mouth went slack. He was ultimately convicted on all 34 counts, though he received an unconditional discharge rather than jail time. He is currently contesting the verdict.

Even the Queen Couldn't Hold His Attention

During his first term, Trump was invited for a full UK state visit a rare and prestigious honor. Queen Elizabeth II personally welcomed him and hosted a state dinner at Buckingham Palace in his honor.

During the Queen's welcoming remarks, as she spoke about the deep historical ties between Britain and the United States, Trump was spotted repeatedly closing his eyes. At one point he appeared to jerk suddenly, as though startling himself back to consciousness.

The reaction online was swift and unforgiving. Social media users, many of them American, expressed embarrassment that the president appeared to doze off while one of the world's most respected monarchs addressed him directly.

What's Actually Going On?

Trump's team and allies have consistently dismissed the incidents as nothing more than a president closing his eyes to think or relax. But the sheer frequency of these moments across courtrooms, sporting events, military ceremonies, and international engagements has kept the conversation alive.

Whether it's a medical issue, simple fatigue, or something in between, one thing is clear: for a man who will be 80 years old this weekend and is leading the most powerful country on earth, the question of his alertness isn't going away anytime soon.
