CNN's newest polling data landed like a gut punch for the Trump administration this week. The numbers paint a picture of a president whose support is eroding across nearly the entire spectrum of major issues not just one or two trouble spots, but a wide, sustained slide.
Anchor Sara Sidner laid it out plainly on air, pointing to Iran, inflation, gas prices, immigration policy, and even Trump's controversial D.C. construction ventures as areas dragging his numbers down. What stood out most, though, was the sheer scale of public dissatisfaction: nearly three-quarters of those surveyed 73% say the president hasn't been paying enough attention to the problems Americans actually care about. That's the most discontent CNN has ever measured on that specific question.
As for his overall approval rating, it now sits at 34%, matching the lowest point of his political career, a mark last hit in the tense days following the January 6 Capitol attack.
How Viewers Reacted
Unsurprisingly, the poll set off a wave of commentary on social media. Some users expressed hope that the growing frustration would translate into real turnout come November, though they acknowledged the road wouldn't be easy given ongoing concerns about voter suppression and intimidation tactics.
Others were far blunter, with one person suggesting the president should simply step down, especially given talk of him potentially seeking a third term. A different commenter seemed almost unsurprised by the numbers, remarking that they expected his ratings to be even worse given recent events.
Health Concerns Add to the Scrutiny
The polling slump comes at a time when Trump is already facing intense scrutiny and not just over policy. At 80 years old, the president has drawn attention for reportedly dozing off during important meetings, and more recently, during the funeral service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Photos showing bruising and swelling on his hands have only added fuel to ongoing questions about his physical condition.
An Explosive Interview on Iran
Adding to the turbulence, Trump recently gave a fiery, expletive-laden interview to Fox News after US forces intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile strike in Jordan. He made it clear he intends to hit back hard against Iran, promising a forceful response in blunt, unfiltered language.
But according to CNN's poll, most Americans aren't convinced that approach is working. A solid 67% of respondents said Trump's military decisions regarding Iran have actually hurt the country, while nearly three-quarters 74% don't believe he has a coherent strategy for handling the conflict at all.
Taken together, the numbers suggest a president facing mounting skepticism on nearly every front from the economy to foreign policy to his own physical stamina just as the midterm campaign season heats up.
