Trump's Approval Numbers Take a Hit as CNN Poll Lands Mid-Broadcast
It wasn't a great day for Donald Trump on CNN. The network was already discussing how Americans view the president when the show had to pause for breaking news Iran had launched missiles targeting US forces, an escalation that added fresh urgency to a conversation that was already going badly for the White House.
Political commentator Maria Cardona didn't hold back when she joined the discussion. Her take: "Clearly, the Iranians can't be trusted, but the problem is the American people don't trust Donald Trump or this administration on anything that they say, including the Iran war."
A Record-Low Level of Trust
The timing lined up with a newly released CNN poll, conducted by SSRS, that paints a pretty grim picture for the administration. A record 73% of adults say Trump hasn't been paying enough attention to the issues that matter most to the country only 27% think he's had his priorities in order.
Cardona connected the dots for viewers, noting that there's a consistent gap between what Trump says publicly and how his actions actually play out. The poll backs that up: roughly two-thirds of respondents believe his policies have made the economy worse, and a similar share think his military decisions on Iran have done more harm than good for the US. Even more striking, about three-quarters of Americans say the president simply isn't in touch with what ordinary people are dealing with day to day.
Approval Rating Sinks to a Career Low
Beyond the Iran-specific numbers, the poll also revealed that Trump's overall approval rating has dropped to 34% tying the lowest point of his entire political career, a mark he previously hit at the tail end of his first term, right after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Half of Americans now say they strongly disapprove of him, the highest that number has ever been across both his terms in office. On the flip side, only 15% say they strongly approve also a record, just in the opposite direction.
"A War Nobody Asked For"
Cardona didn't stop at the numbers. She argued that most Americans still don't understand why the US got involved in this conflict in the first place, since the majority never wanted it to begin with. In her words, it was "a war of choice by Donald Trump."
She went on to point out the disconnect between the administration's actions and what people expected back in 2024. While everyday Americans are focused on making ends meet, she said, what they're seeing from the White House feels like the opposite of what was promised and the opposite of what they actually need right now.
Viewers Weigh In On Both Sides
The segment sparked plenty of reaction online, much of it siding with Cardona's assessment. One commenter joked that the 27% who approve of Trump's priorities were probably wealthy tax dodgers. Another was far more scathing, accusing the president of prioritizing self-enrichment and chaos over actually governing. A third took a sarcastic jab, listing out a rundown of controversial actions from starting conflicts abroad to cracking down on immigration as evidence that he's been anything but idle.
Not everyone agreed with the poll's framing, though. Some pushed back hard, arguing there's plenty of evidence the administration has actually delivered pointing to border security measures, military readiness, deportations of undocumented immigrants with criminal records, falling prices, low unemployment, efforts to cut government waste, and new initiatives like TrumpRx and Trump Accounts as proof things are moving in the right direction.
The Bigger Picture
Whatever side of the debate people land on, the numbers themselves are hard to ignore. With approval ratings matching a career low and public skepticism about the Iran conflict growing, this latest CNN poll adds to a broader narrative of an administration facing mounting pressure on multiple fronts economic, military, and political all at once.
