A Tense Moment Caught on Camera
Senator Lindsey Graham, the longtime South Carolina Republican, died on July 11 at age 71. His funeral was held Tuesday at Washington National Cathedral, drawing a who's who of political figures, including President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who sat together throughout the service. It wasn't long before Trump's behavior during the ceremony became a talking point of its own, with some calling his conduct inappropriate for the setting.
Adding to the scrutiny, Trump appeared to briefly fall asleep at points during the funeral not the first time he's been photographed nodding off at a major public event, a pattern that has fueled ongoing speculation about his health.
What the Lip Reader Claims Was Said
The real story to emerge from the service, though, came from a professional lip reader hired to analyze the footage. Jeremy Freeman, speaking with Reach, said he was able to make out a sharp exchange between Trump and Vance while Pastor Tim Tate addressed the congregation.
According to Freeman's reading, Trump turned to Vance and asked, in essence, who had picked this particular pastor for the service. Vance's response was simply "Amen," echoing the rest of the room. Freeman says Trump then went further, telling Vance he found the eulogy tedious and that he couldn't believe how it was unfolding. Whatever Vance said in reply if anything wasn't picked up.
From Rivals to Allies
The apparent moment of irritation stands in contrast to the tribute Trump paid to Graham elsewhere in the service, tapping the senator's casket as he walked past it a small, personal gesture toward a man who'd become one of his most trusted allies in the Senate.
That friendship wasn't always a given. Graham was one of Trump's most vocal critics during the 2016 Republican primary race. But the relationship shifted dramatically in the years that followed. Graham became a key voice in Trump's ear on foreign policy, particularly on Iran and Ukraine, and was instrumental in pushing through Trump's Supreme Court nominees including during the bruising confirmation battle over Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
An Unusual Eulogy
Trump's own turn at the podium was memorable for reasons beyond the alleged Vance exchange. He told mourners that "virtually everyone" had liked Graham, before quickly correcting himself with a joke that not everyone had, but that it "sounds good" to say so. He described Graham as tough, then paused to share an unscripted memory: reading Graham's personal phone number aloud to the crowd, telling them to give it a try if they wanted.
The room reportedly laughed at the moment. Trump explained that the stunt was actually how their friendship started after he shared the number publicly once before, Graham's phone reportedly "exploded" with calls. What began as a one-day prank turned into a decade-long bond, with Trump joking that it was Graham who got the last laugh, since he kept calling Trump for years afterward.
Trump Talks Ukraine With Zelenskyy
Separately, Trump held a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the war with Russia. Zelenskyy said afterward that Trump agreed to grant Ukraine licenses to manufacture Patriot missile systems domestically a significant move, given how central Patriot batteries are to defending cities like Kyiv from Russian strikes.
The White House hasn't formally confirmed the arrangement yet. But Zelenskyy told Fox News that Trump agreed to provide the licenses, and that he'd since met with representatives from major U.S. defense manufacturers to discuss the details, adding that he's hopeful the two countries can move forward with co-production.
Lip reader should be paying attention to the service.
